Wines and dines me, calls me beautiful

I’m concerned!

I’ve been dating a man for about 3 months and things have happened very fast. He seems too good to be true. He showers me with attention, and calls me all the time. I just recently noticed that he has a standard phrase to begin his calls -- “Hey, Beautiful, how’s your day?” Now that I am thinking about it he never calls me by my name on the phone, always some term of endearment. My sister mentioned the other day that he never calls me by my name at home either, always a term of endearment. I would not have even noticed, except one day recently when I was walking past his home office, I heard him say the exact same phrase he uses for me on the phone to someone else. As nonchalantly as I could, I asked him who he was just talking to, and he said his secretary. Something told me he wasn’t telling me the truth. I just don’t know how or if this should change things between us. Anyone else had this experience? What happened? – D.N., Chicago

A woman I used to work with used to always say in response to rumors, “where there’s smoke, there’s fire.” While she didn’t get the “innocent until proven guilty” thing, she was right about thinking that where there’s an indication of something wrong, there usually is. If you’re feeling creepy about this, there’s a reason. Remember, without trust, there’s no relationship.

Before I let my suspicions about anything run wild, I confront the party involved and get it out. I try to put it in a nice way and soften the harshness that I really feel. I really think this situation will fester if you don’t get to the bottom of it.

My experience if that you have one suspicion about someone, there are usually others. I wait for something else to catch my attention and see how it all adds up. From what you say, I think the guy is a little slimy. He shouldn’t be calling his secretary “Beautiful.”
