How many moons ago...?

Prying age sleuths

You are private about your age. Someone asked you where you went to college. You answered. Then they asked you when you graduated. What did you say? How did it turn out?

NuKazoo readers share their experiences:

When the mother of one of my child's classmates asked me my graduation year, I told the truth and then worried if I was the oldest mother in the group.

-- Susan from SW burbs of Chicago

Whenever this comes up, I always laugh and say, “I’d rather tell you my weight!”

-- A.J. from Chicago

My answer for this one is always the same.  I ask them if they have any yearbooks around to tell if I'm lying!

-- Rory, Mpls

Maybe men have it easier than women when it comes to age, but I don’t care if anyone knows.  I don’t think this is a tough situation. I just tell ‘em the truth and fuggedaboudit!

-- Steve, Philly

I lied and told her that I dropped out to move to be near my lesbian lover.  She quickly changed the subject.

-- Missy from Natchez

I graduated at least 15 years before the person asking, so I thought I'd exaggerate it even more.  I added 10 years to my age and made her think since our kids are the same age I must have amazing fertility!

-- Alexis, Houston

I tell him I graduated in 1985. That would imply that I'm in my early 40's. But since I'm actually 67 it's unclear whether I look older than I am or was just a slow learner.

-- Karl, Florida

I'm proud to answer with my age, 52.  I don't act it and I don't look it!

-- Giacomo, Chicago

I broke out in a slight sweat and blushed, knowing I was much older than the asker, even though our kids are the same age.  I told her the truth (I’m 47 and she’s 37).  When she looked shocked and said “Wow! You really are old!” I quickly recovered and said, “Yeah, but I sure don’t look it, do I”

-- Megan from MI

I am proud of my age and love to see how people will respond when I tell them. The real truth -- just looking for that reaction of "you sure don't look 48" but I never seem to get it!

-- Sara from Chicago

I told the truth, which is 1990, and quickly asked her for the same information.  It felt awkward for me to address age so directly, but maybe next time it’ll be easier!

 -- Paige in Denver

I looked the person right in the eye and said, “I’m 38.” I think the asker felt busted. I’m really 39, but it was none of her business!

-- Shawn from Wilmington

I gave him a big smile and said, "That's kind of personal, don't you think?!"  The person asking didn't know how to respond.  I was pleased with myself!

--You're as young as you feel, Tampa
